Tonga Commercial Fisheries Conference,  7 - 9 February, 2007

The Department of Fisheries will be hosting a Tonga Fisheries Conference on the 7 ^th, 8 ^th and 9 ^th of February, 2007.   Participants at the conference will be provided with information on the latest developments and current status of each fishery.  Facilitated discussions on key issues will consolidate the views of Department of Fisheries, industry representatives and other key stakeholders to assist in the development of strategies that will ensure the long term viability and competitiveness of the fishing industry.

The conference is considered timely as the Department of Fisheries is developing a new Strategic Plan and outcomes from this conference should provide valuable strategic direction of the Department of Fisheries, the Government of Tonga and private industry with regard to improved management and development of Tonga ’s fisheries recourses.

The conference is being organised by the Department of Fisheries with the assistance of the Australian Government Funded Tonga Fisheries Project.  We are anticipating around sixty participants; participants from all areas of Tonga as well as international guests.
