The Tongan National Tuna Conference

Introduction
This conference is
aimed at developing strategies that will ensure the long term viability and
competitiveness of the Tongan Tuna Industry. The conference is held at a time
when the industry can be seen to be at the cross roads. It has experienced
meteoric growth over the past decade but has just experienced it worst fishing
year in a decade. This combined with significant increases in costs of
production and flat tuna prices has placed great strain on the industry.
A viable Tongan Tuna
Industry is vital to the Tongan economy it is therefore appropriate to take
stock of where we have come from where we are at and where we should aim to be
in the next 5 years. The industry impacts on all sectors of the economy and a
conference of this nature should have the participation of representatives from
all levels of the economy.
Participants will be
able to obtain first hand information on the latest developments, as well as the
future prospects of the tuna industry from regional experts and share views and
discuss current problems on various aspects of the industry. The proposed panel
sessions will enable the conference participants to agree on recommendations to
be put to Government to assist the industry’s management and development.
