The Tongan National Tuna Conference 2003

Introduction

This conference is aimed at developing strategies that will ensure the long term viability and competitiveness of the Tongan Tuna Industry. The conference is held at a time when the industry can be seen to be at the cross roads. It has experienced meteoric growth over the past decade but has just experienced it worst fishing year in a decade. This combined with significant increases in costs of production and flat tuna prices has placed great strain on the industry.

A viable Tongan Tuna Industry is vital to the Tongan economy it is therefore appropriate to take stock of where we have come from where we are at and where we should aim to be in the next 5 years. The industry impacts on all sectors of the economy and a conference of this nature should have the participation of representatives from all levels of the economy.

Participants will be able to obtain first hand information on the latest developments, as well as the future prospects of the tuna industry from regional experts and share views and discuss current problems on various aspects of the industry.
