On the 7th of February the Tonga Commercial Fisheries Conference hosted by the Department of Fisheries and the Australian Government funded Tonga Fisheries Project will convene at Lopaukamea 2 ‘Atele. This conference is important as it aims at providing guidance for us all, in the way ahead. It will aid us to formulate policy to help mobilize the further sustainable commercial development of the fisheries sector.
This conference will provide an opportunity for industry participants to voice their views and to make suggestions of how we can further develop and promote this important sector. It provides an opportunity for the Government of Tonga, especially the Department of Fisheries, to establish and develop a working relationship and open dialogue with industry. We had a need for greater economic activity before the events of 16/11 now it is an imperative and essential to our survival as a nation state. The Government of Tonga is anxious to ensure there is appropriate action to avoid the potentially detrimental effects of internationally declining value of fishery exports.
That is why this conference has my full support. The fisheries sector has, and continues to make, a significant contribution to our economy by providing vital food security, significant economic activity and vital foreign earnings. But the performance of the sector is below optimal and this conference provides the opportunity to direct growth and development of fisheries in Tonga to support the Kingdom’s economic growth.
